MerryView Smart Window Film vs Switchable Smart Film

MerryView smart window film was marketed online as an app-controlled display film. Switchable smart film is a different product: it turns the glass you already own from clear to frosted on command, for privacy.
If you typed Merry View into a search bar, you were probably looking for something that changes how a window looks at the touch of a button. That is a fair thing to want, and the names make the categories easy to blur together. When we checked the vendor's store at merryview.store on October 19, 2026, it showed only "This store is unavailable." That is all we can tell you about that product, and we are not going to guess at the rest. What we can do is explain the category you were shopping in, so the money you spend ends up on the right thing for your windows.
What people mean by "smart window film"
Three very different products get searched under nearly the same words. They do different jobs, cost different amounts, and are installed in different ways, so it helps to separate them before you compare anything.
1. Decorative display film
This is the category MerryView was marketed in: an app-controlled display film. The point of a display film is what the window shows. If a seasonal look or a lighting effect on the glass is what you are after, that is the category to look in, and it is not something we sell or install.
2. Static frosted or privacy film
This is the adhesive frost you can buy by the roll at a hardware store. It is frosted all the time. It blocks the view in both directions every hour of the day, it costs very little, and for a garage door lite or a closet window nobody looks out of, it is often the honest right answer. Our guide to window frosting options walks through when permanent frost or etched glass beats anything switchable.
3. Switchable smart film
This is the product Smart View installs. Switchable smart film (the industry calls it PDLC smart film, for polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) is a thin layer bonded to the inside face of the glass. With power on, the liquid crystals line up and the glass is clear. With power off, they scatter light and the pane turns an even, flat milky white. Light still comes through when it is frosted, but shapes and faces do not. One press takes you from a full view to full privacy and back. You can read how the material works and where it fits on our switchable smart film page.
Which one do you actually want?
Most people know the answer once they say out loud what the window needs to do. A quick way to sort it:
- You want the window to show a look, a color, or a scene. That is a display product, not a privacy product. Look in the decorative category.
- You never need to see out of this window. Static frost film or etched glass is cheaper and simpler. There is no reason to pay for switching you will not use.
- You want privacy some of the time and the view the rest of the time. A bathroom window over a tub, a front door with a glass panel, a home office facing the street, a bedroom that looks at the neighbors. That is exactly what switchable smart film is for.
- You want privacy without blinds, curtains or shades. Switchable film replaces the window covering entirely, with nothing to dust, tangle or pull.
- You are renovating and the glass itself is being replaced. You may be better served by smart glass panels with the switchable layer sealed inside, rather than film added later. We can tell you which fits from photos.
What switchable film does that a display film isn't built for
A display film and a switchable privacy film are built around different questions. One asks what the window should show. The other asks who should be able to see through it, and when. Here is what the second answer looks like in a real home.
Privacy that disappears when you do not need it. Clear, the window looks like ordinary glass, and the view is untouched. Frosted, the pane reads as a solid milky white from either side, day or night. There is no in-between haze to put up with.
It goes on the glass you already own. The film is custom-cut and bonded to the interior face of your existing pane, so there is no new window unit, no re-framing and no demolition. If your windows are sound, they stay. Our guide to smart film for existing windows covers which glass takes it well and what to check first.
You choose how to switch it. Every install can run from a wall switch, a handheld remote, a phone app, or voice through a smart-home system such as Alexa or Google Home. Several panels can share one zone, or each window can switch on its own.
It lets daylight in while frosted. Unlike a blackout shade, a frosted pane still brightens the room. That is why bathrooms, entryways and street-facing rooms are where most of our residential work ends up.

That Laguna Beach window is a good example of the retrofit route. The homeowners kept their window, frame and travertine surround exactly as they were; the full story is in our smart film bathroom in Laguna Beach project.
What a professional install includes
Switchable smart film is a wired product, and it is installed by a trained crew rather than sold as a kit. Our smart film material orders go to licensed contractors and glaziers only, because how the film is applied and powered decides how well it performs for years. A Smart View job runs like this:
If you want to see what the switch looks like in a real home before you call, our Instagram at @lasmartview shows finished installs going clear to frosted.
- Photos and rough sizes first. Send a few pictures of the windows and approximate measurements, and we come back with a free estimate within one to two business days. No one has to come out to give you a number.
- Exact measuring on site. Once you go ahead, precise measuring is part of the paid job, so the film is cut to your actual glass, not to a guess.
- Custom-cut film with factory-applied busbars. The copper connections that carry power to each panel are put on before the film reaches your home.
- Clean bonding to prepped glass. The pane is cleaned and the film is applied dust-free to the interior face, which is what prevents bubbles and edge lift.
- Wiring and a sized transformer. Each switching zone gets a low-voltage transformer matched to its glass area, plus the switch, remote or smart-home link you chose.
- Testing before we leave. Every panel is switched, checked and handed over working.
If you would like to see it switch in person before deciding, our showroom is open by appointment only.
Cost and lifespan
A single small window usually starts around $1,500 fully installed, and the price scales from there with glass area, the number of windows, and the controls you choose. The full breakdown of what moves the number, including film versus new glass, is on our smart glass cost page, and every quote is itemized so nothing shows up as a surprise on install day.
On lifespan, quality switchable film that is professionally installed lasts well over ten years, and often longer with normal use. Switching it on and off does not wear it out; UV and heat over time are what age any film, which is why the grade of film matters so much. Two warranties back a Smart View install: our one-year workmanship warranty on the installation, and the manufacturer's product warranty on the film itself, which runs far longer. The details are in our post on how long PDLC smart film lasts.
Quick answers
Is MerryView the same thing as switchable smart film?
No. It was marketed as an app-controlled display film. Switchable smart film is a privacy product that turns your glass from clear to frosted on command.
Can switchable smart film go on the windows I already have?
Yes. It is custom-cut and bonded to the interior face of your existing glass, so the window, frame and trim stay in place. No glass replacement is needed when the panes are in good shape.
Can I switch it from my phone?
Yes. Switchable film can run from a wall switch, a remote, a phone app, or voice through a smart-home system like Alexa or Google Home, and you can mix them on the same install.
How much does it cost to do one window?
A single small window usually starts around $1,500 fully installed, and larger or multi-window projects scale up from there. Send photos and rough sizes for an itemized quote.
