Project Overview

This smart film bathroom in Laguna Beach sits on a canyon hillside, finished in warm travertine with matte-black fixtures and a freestanding tub set directly beneath a wide picture window. The window is the reason the room works — it frames the canyon and pulls soft light across the stone — and it is also the reason nobody could fully relax in the tub, with neighboring homes stepped up the slope across the way. Smart View applied switchable smart film to the existing pane, so 22 sq ft of glass now turns from crystal clear to solid frosted at the press of a remote. The window, the frame, and the view all stayed exactly as they were.

The Problem: A Bathtub in Full View of the Canyon

Hillside lots trade privacy for views. In a canyon neighborhood the houses face each other across the slope — often from above — so a generous bathroom window puts the tub squarely in the neighbors' sightline, and the room feels most exposed at exactly the moments it should feel most private. The standard fixes all subtract something. Blinds and curtains hold steam against the glass, mildew in a wet room, and cover the canyon whether you need privacy or not. A permanently frosted pane keeps the privacy but erases the view for good. And because this is a fixed picture window, there is no cracking it open and angling a shade — the glass is the whole story.

The retrofit closes that gap. Smart film is a thin PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer bonded to the glass already in the frame. With power on, the crystals line up and the pane is clear; with power off, they scatter and the glass reads as a solid, even frost you can't see through. Because the film bonds to the existing pane, the window needed no new glass unit and the frame was never opened — a one-visit retrofit instead of a window replacement.

Bath Time, On One Button

Day to day the window lives clear, and the room keeps its full sweep of the canyon. When it's time for a bath, one tap on the remote frosts the entire pane at once — the room goes private, the daylight stays soft and even through the frost — and one more tap brings the view back when you're done. Nothing was drilled into the travertine and nothing hangs in front of the glass; the remote lives on the tub tray.
