Smart Glass Whole-Home Retrofit in Palm Springs

Project Overview

In September 2026, Smart View completed a whole-home smart film retrofit at a private Palm Springs residence: 369 square feet of switchable PDLC smart film applied to the glass the house already had, across four rooms — the living room, the office, the bathroom and the master bedroom. It is a low, glass-walled desert house with plank ceilings and a private pool courtyard a few steps from the bed and the tub, which is exactly the kind of Palm Springs house that has always had a privacy problem it could not solve with blinds. Every pane that got film stayed in its frame; the switchable layer went onto the existing glass, so from the courtyard and the street the house looks exactly as it did before we arrived.

The Problem: A Desert House Made of Glass

Palm Springs houses are built to dissolve the wall between the room and the courtyard, and this one does it in every room that matters: the bedroom looks onto the pool, the bathroom opens onto the same courtyard, and the living room and office sit behind full-height glass. That is the whole appeal of the house, and it is also why none of those rooms could ever be private. After dark, with the lights on, a glass wall works in reverse, and the pool courtyard is not the only thing on the other side of it. The conventional fixes all fight the architecture: blinds and drapes hang hardware across the one thing the house was designed around, and etched or permanently frosted glass gives up the view for good to solve a problem that only exists some of the time. The owners wanted all four rooms private on demand, with nothing added in front of the glass.

Smart film does that without replacing anything. It is a thin PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer applied to the face of the glass already in the frame. Powered, the crystals line up and the pane is clear; unpowered, they scatter and the glass reads as a solid, even white that shapes do not carry through, while daylight keeps passing into the room. Because the film goes onto each pane individually, a house full of different openings — a mullioned bedroom wall, a bathroom door, a living-room slider — can all be done on one visit, on the glass that is already there. Four Rooms, One Retrofit

Most of our residential jobs are one window or one room. This one is the whole house, and the difference shows in how the rooms are used. The master bedroom's window wall lives clear by day and goes white at night without a curtain track anywhere on the glass.
