Project Overview

This front door sits at the end of a Topanga entry courtyard — a white stucco wall with a circular arch cut through it, a drought garden gone gold in the canyon sun, and a concrete path that steps up to the covered porch. The door itself is one large lite in a black frame, so from the entry hall you look straight out through the arch to the garden — and anyone coming up the path looks straight back in. In 2026, our team installed the fix on the glass the door already had: what reads as a smart glass front door in Topanga is switchable smart film (PDLC) bonded to the existing lite — 24 sq ft of it — turning crystal clear to solid frosted on a handheld remote. The door never came off its hinges, and the blue evil-eye charm the owners keep above the frame never had to move.

Inside the Topanga Build

The Problem: A Front Door That Works Both Ways

The glass is the best and worst thing about this entry. It pulls the courtyard — the arch, the succulents, the yellow groundcover — into the house, and it is the entry hall's only daylight. It also means the doormat's come on in is written under a pane anyone can read the house through: the hall, the keys on their hooks, whoever crosses between rooms. The usual fixes each give something up. A curtain on a front door blocks the light and the courtyard with it; an etched or permanently frosted pane does the same thing forever.

Smart film closes that gap without replacing anything. It is a thin PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer bonded to the glass already hanging in the door. With power on, the crystals line up and the lite is crystal clear; with power off, they scatter and the glass reads as a solid, even frost that shapes don't carry through — someone on the porch is a soft shadow at most, while daylight keeps passing into the hall.
