Smart Film Front Door, Rowland Heights — Entry Privacy on a Remote

Project Overview

This smart film front door in Rowland Heights opens onto a two-story foyer, where a single tall glass lite sits behind an ornamental wrought-iron scroll grille and pulls daylight deep into the entry. The glass gave the owners the light and the hillside-garden view they wanted — and, at the same time, a clear line of sight straight into the house from the front step. Smart View applied switchable smart film to the existing door lite, so the glass turns from crystal clear to solid frosted at the press of a remote, and the decorative ironwork was never touched.

Inside the Rowland Heights Build

  • 31 sq ft of switchable smart film, cut to the single tall entry-door lite
  • Applied to the existing glass — the ornamental wrought-iron scroll grille stayed in place, untouched
  • Clear-to-frosted control on a handheld remote — no wall switch cut into the entry paneling
  • Concealed low-voltage driver powers the film; the door hardware and grille are unchanged
  • Even, milky-white frost across the full lite for complete doorway privacy
  • Finish and edge seal chosen for a west-facing entry that takes direct afternoon sun

The Problem: A Glass Front Door You Can See Straight Through

A grand glass entry has a built-in trade-off. The same lite that floods a two-story foyer with light and frames the garden also lets anyone on the doorstep look straight in — at the staircase, the entry, and whoever is home. The wrought-iron scrollwork is beautiful, but it is decoration, not a screen; you can see right between the curls. The usual fixes each cost something: a curtain or an entry sidelight shade blocks the daylight and hides the ironwork, and permanently frosted film would darken the foyer and erase the garden view for good.

That is the gap this install was built to close. The fix is smart film — a thin PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer bonded to the existing glass. With power on, the crystals line up and the lite is clear; with power off, they scatter and the glass reads as a solid, even frost you can’t see through. Nothing hangs in front of the door, nothing has to be wiped down, and the ironwork keeps its full look. The door stays a door — it just gains an on/off privacy setting.

On a Remote, Every Day

Day to day the glass lives clear, so the foyer keeps its light and the view out to the hillside garden and stone patio. When someone’s at the door after dark, or the family just wants the entry closed off, one tap on the remote frosts the whole lite at once — then clears it again just as fast. Because the control is a handheld remote, nothing had to be routed through the entry wall or the ironwork. It is the same on-demand entry privacy we built into a smart film front door in La Cañada Flintridge, here fitted to a taller single lite behind a decorative grille.

Working with Smart View

Every Smart View project starts with a measurement and a written proposal, so you see the smart glass cost before anything is ordered — a single lite like this front door starts modestly and scales with the glass area, so the number always fits the actual job. If you have a glass entry door, a sidelight, or any street-facing window where you want the light and the privacy, we can retrofit switchable film onto the glass you already have — backed by our 1-year warranty (CA license #1134029).
