Project Overview

This smart glass shower in Culver City sits inside a glass box. The bath is a room within a room — book-matched marble on every surface, a walk-in shower stall in the far corner, a floating stone vanity — and the whole enclosure is wrapped in full-height glass, so from the bedroom side it was on permanent display. In 2026, Smart View retrofitted switchable smart glass film (PDLC) onto the existing shower glass: 92 sq ft across the walls and the swing door, all of it turning from crystal clear to solid frosted on a wall switch beside the opening. No pane was pulled, re-cut or re-hung, and nothing about the enclosure’s lines changed.

Inside the Culver City Build

The Problem: A Bath With Nothing to Hide Behind

A glass-walled bathroom is a deliberate piece of design. It borrows daylight from the room outside, it lets the marble read as one continuous surface, and it keeps a compact floor plan feeling open. It also has no soft edges: every fixture, and everyone using them, is in full view of the bedroom the moment the light goes on.

The usual fixes all fight that design. Curtains and blinds belong on windows, not on a wet room that runs hot and humid twice a day — fabric in that air holds moisture and eventually mildews, and a rod hung across a frameless glass wall undoes the detail the enclosure was built for. Acid etching or an adhesive frost solves the privacy permanently, which is another way of saying the light, the stone and the sightline are gone for good.

A retrofit avoided the trade entirely. Smart glass film is a thin PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer bonded to the glass already standing in the opening. With power on, the crystals line up and the pane is clear; with power off, they scatter and the glass reads as a solid, even frost that shapes do not carry through — someone on the far side is a soft shadow at most. Light still passes, so a frosted enclosure does not go dark; it stops being see-through, not bright. And because the film goes onto the panes already in place, no glass was ordered and no opening was disturbed.

One Switch, the Whole Enclosure

Most of the day the partition lives clear, and the suite reads as one bright marble volume. When the bath is in use, a press on the wall switch by the opening frosts every pane at once — walls and door together — and the enclosure turns into a quiet white block until a second press hands the room back. A wall switch suits a bathroom better than a remote: it works the way a light does, you reach for it on the way in, and there is nothing to keep track of on a wet counter. The privacy comes from the film in the glass rather than something hanging in front of it, so there is nothing to dry out afterwards and nothing to wipe down but the pane itself.
