Smart Film Showroom Doors in North Hollywood
Project Overview
Behind the sales floor of a kitchen and bath showroom in North Hollywood, two glass doors lead to the back of the house: a single door off a hallway of light stone tile, and a double door that opens straight onto the showroom's grey-and-cream checkered floor. Both are black steel-grid doors set into warm, beige plaster walls — the kind of door that looks the part in a design showroom. The catch is the glass. Every lite in that grid shows whatever sits behind it. In November 2026, our team made these smart film showroom doors in North Hollywood: switchable film applied to the glass the doors already had, so the panels go from clear to frosted on a handheld remote. The steel grid and the door frames stayed exactly as they were.
Inside the North Hollywood Build
- Three door panels in total — one single door and one double door (two panels), all black steel-grid doors between the showroom and a back area
- About 65 sq ft of white self-adhesive smart film, applied to the existing glass behind the grid
- Every lite in a panel switches at the same moment; the steel bars stay crisp black against the frost
- Three busbar connections, one per panel: a thin copper strip along the film's edge that carries the power in
- Two 30-watt plug-in transformers with a receiver, controlled from a handheld remote
- White film, which is also the clearest film color when it is switched on

The Problem: Glass Doors Into the Back of the House
A steel-grid door is a design choice. It gives a showroom the open, gallery look that suits tile, stone and fixtures, and it lets light move between rooms. But a door into the back of the house is a door into the part of a business customers don't need to see. Clear glass shows all of it, all the time. The usual fixes undo the reason the doors went in: a curtain or a blind on a steel-grid door hides the grid itself, and a permanent frosted film turns a handsome door into a plain white panel forever.
Smart film keeps both options. It is a thin PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer bonded to the existing glass. With power on, the crystals line up and the panel is clear; with power off, they scatter and the glass becomes a solid, even frost that hides what's behind it while daylight still passes. Because it goes onto the glass already in the frame, there was no new glass to order and no door to rebuild — the steel grid simply sits on top of the film's frost.
Clear for the Floor, Frosted on a Remote
Clear, the doors read the way they were designed to: an open grid of black steel with the next room visible through it, and the checkered floor running right up to the threshold. Frosted, the same doors become a bright, even white screen — the grid stays, the back of the house disappears. On the double door, both panels switch together, so the pair always matches. The handheld remote means nothing new had to be cut into the plaster beside either door. One care note worth knowing: PDLC film is clear only while it is powered, so it is meant to be switched — clear when you want the view, off when you don't — rather than left clear around the clock. It is the same retrofit we put on a black steel-frame front door in Newport Beach, here applied to three interior commercial door panels.
Working with Smart View
You see the smart glass cost before anything is ordered — a single small window usually starts around $1,500 fully installed and scales from there with the glass area, so a set of door panels like these is priced off the actual glass. If you run a showroom, a shop or an office with glass doors you would like to close off on demand, send photos and dimensions and we will come back within one to two business days — backed by our 1-year warranty (CA license #1134029).
