Project Overview

This smart film laboratory window in Los Angeles is a four-panel band of interior glazing above a lab bench — microscopes at one end, a fully loaded power raceway underneath, and a corridor on the other side of the glass. The sightline is the reason the window exists: from the corridor you look straight into the brightly lit lab, its benches, fume hoods, and ceiling-hung utility drops. It's a view the facility wants open on some days and needs to close off on others. Smart View applied switchable smart film to all four existing panels, so 57 sq ft of glass now turns from crystal clear to solid frosted at the press of a remote — and the wall, the frames, and the working lab around them never went under construction.

The Problem: One Window With Two Jobs

An interior observation window earns its keep in a laboratory. The corridor sightline is how a supervisor checks a running experiment without opening the door, how a safety walk-through happens without gowning up, and how a facility shows its work to visitors from the hallway. But the same pane works against the room the moment the work needs discretion. Proprietary setups sit in view of everyone who walks past, and the people at the bench spend their day doing precision work with a corridor of movement at eye level. The standard fixes don't belong in a lab: blinds and shades over a bench are a dust shelf above the work surface, and a permanently frosted pane solves the privacy problem by deleting the oversight sightline the window was built to provide.

The retrofit keeps both jobs. Smart film is a thin PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer bonded to the glass already in the frame. With power on, the crystals line up and the panels are clear; with power off, they scatter and the glass reads as a solid, even frost you can't see through. Because the film bonds to the existing glazing, no panels came out of the wall and no construction happened over the bench — in a room full of calibrated instruments, a retrofit beats a construction project by a wide margin.

Clear for Oversight, Frosted for Focus

Day to day the panels live clear, and the corridor keeps its full view into the lab. When a run needs to stay off display — a client project, an unpublished setup, or just a bench that needs fewer spectators — one press of the remote frosts the window, and from the corridor the glazing becomes a wall of soft, even white with the lab's light still glowing through it.
