Smart Glass Study Room in Buena Park — Home Office Privacy on Demand
Project Overview
In 2024, we installed smart glass study room Buena Park for a homeowner who wanted on-demand privacy inside his second-floor home office. The space — surrounded by plants, an aquarium, and generous natural light — worked beautifully for focus, but needed a way to screen off the room during work calls and heads-down hours without losing any of that ambient light. We applied 85 sqft of PDLC switchable smart glass film to the existing glazing on the door and surrounding glass walls, wired into Alexa voice control.
The Challenge
The room’s strengths — open sightlines, uninterrupted daylight, direct view into the rest of the house — also made it hard to work without interruption when family members moved through nearby areas. Traditional fixes like blinds or frosted vinyl would have permanently darkened the room or forced a choice between privacy and light. The homeowner wanted both, toggled on demand.
- Privacy that activates only when needed, preserving daylight the rest of the time
- Zero construction disruption — no replacing glass, no reframing the door
- Hands-free control that fits naturally into an existing smart-home routine
The Solution
Our team retrofitted PDLC switchable smart glass film onto the door and the surrounding glass panels. When powered on, the film is optically clear; when powered off, it turns to an opaque frosted state that blocks sightlines while still passing ambient light. We ran a discreet electrical feed to the panels and integrated the circuit with the homeowner’s Alexa setup, so a spoken command swaps the entire room between clear and private modes. Smart glass study room Buena Park installs like this rely on clean electrical routing and smart-home pairing — both handled by our smart glass installation Los Angeles team in our Canoga Park warehouse.
The Outcome
The study now functions as a true home office on demand. During work hours, a single voice command frosts the glass and seals the room off visually; outside of work, the film stays clear and the space reads as it always has — an open, plant-filled, light-filled corner of the house. The homeowner has told us the upgrade fit into his daily routine without changing the feel of the room, which was the whole point. We documented a similar smart-glass office privacy install in our Newport Beach executive office project — same product, different scale.
