Smart Glass Shower Torrance — 65 sqft of Custom PDLC Bathroom Windows
Project Overview
In 2025 our team completed a smart glass shower Torrance install for a residential client — 65 sqft of PDLC switchable smart film custom-cut to fit six arched-top shower windows. The owners wanted privacy on demand without giving up the daylight the arched windows were designed to bring in.
The Problem
The bathroom was built around a feature wall of six arched-top windows over the shower — architecturally beautiful, but every glance from the yard or pool deck looked straight in. Standard fixes wouldn’t work. Permanent frosting would have killed the daylight and the architectural detail. Pull-down shades or curtains over arched openings look wrong on day one and worse after a year of bathroom humidity.
- Privacy on demand for shower use without sacrificing daylight
- Preserve the arched-window detail that defined the room
- No moving parts above a wet zone — no curtains, no blinds, no shades
- A finish that wouldn’t fog, stain, or peel in a steam-heavy environment
Why a smart film retrofit was the right call
Replacing six custom arched windows with new laminated smart glass would have cost more than the rest of the bathroom and meant pulling weatherproofing and trim on an exterior wall. A PDLC smart film retrofit avoided every one of those costs. We bonded the switchable film to the room-facing side of each existing pane — no demolition, no glazing replacement, no envelope work. The bathroom was usable again within hours of the install.
Smart Glass Shower Torrance: The Build
We applied PDLC switchable smart film — a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer that turns clear when powered and opaque when off — across all six arched-top windows. The tricky part on this smart glass shower Torrance install was the arched tops: standard rectangular film sheets don’t fit a curved opening cleanly. We measured each window individually, cut the film to the exact arched profile of each pane, and applied each piece for a flush, edge-to-edge finish that follows the architecture. Powered on, the windows read as their original clear arched glass; powered off they turn opaque white in under a second.

The Outcome
The shower now switches from open and daylight-filled to fully private at a single touch — no curtains to pull, no blinds to clean, no shades over the arched openings to look wrong. The owners use clear mode for daytime daylight and opaque mode any time the shower is in use. Because the film sits on the inside face of the glass, it never sees water directly, and routine cleaning is glass cleaner on a microfiber cloth. Compared to the alternatives the homeowners considered, the smart glass shower Torrance install delivered the only solution that preserved both the privacy and the architectural feature of the arched windows. Six months on, the panels are switching reliably with no maintenance beyond routine cleaning.
