In 2025 our team completed a smart glass shower Tarzana install for a residential client — 60 sqft of PDLC switchable smart film retrofitted across two separate bathroom shower windows in the same home. Both showers switch from clear to opaque on demand, giving the owners daylight when they want it and privacy when they need it.
Smart Glass Shower Tarzana — 60 sqft of PDLC Across Two Residential Showers
Project Overview
The Problem
The home had two showers built with full-height clear glass — one in the primary suite, one in a secondary bath — and both looked directly out into the yard and onto neighboring sightlines. Standard fixes weren’t acceptable. Permanent frosting would have killed the daylight and dated the bathroom finish. Curtains and pull-down shades over shower glass collect water, mildew, and dust, and they look temporary in a high-end space.
- Privacy on demand in both showers without sacrificing daylight
- No moving parts above a wet zone — no curtains, no shades, no blinds
- A finish that wouldn’t fog, peel, or stain in a steam-heavy environment
- Simple, consistent control across both rooms
Why a smart film retrofit was the right call
Replacing the existing shower glazing with new laminated smart glass would have meant pulling waterproofed panels off finished tile walls — a tear-out and rebuild for each shower. A PDLC smart film retrofit avoided every one of those costs. We bonded the switchable film to the room-facing side of the existing shower glass — no demolition, no waterproofing redo, no tile work. Both bathrooms were back in use within hours of the install.
Smart Glass Shower Tarzana: The Build
We applied PDLC switchable smart film — a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer that turns clear when powered and opaque when off — across both shower glazings on this smart glass shower Tarzana install. Each shower runs off its own wall switch, so the owners can control each bathroom independently — switching one room doesn’t affect the other, which keeps the controls intuitive for guests and family. Powered on, the glass reads as ordinary clear glass and daylight passes through normally. Powered off, the same panels turn opaque white in under a second and the shower is fully private.

The Outcome
Both showers now switch in under a second, controlled by a wall switch the owners can hit on the way in. Day-to-day, the glass stays clear so each bathroom keeps the daylight the architecture was designed around — opaque mode only kicks in when the shower is in use. Because the film sits on the inside face of the existing glass, it never sees water directly, and routine cleaning is the same as any other interior glass: glass cleaner on a microfiber cloth. The smart glass shower Tarzana install delivered the same privacy a permanent frost or shade would have given, without losing the open, daylight-driven feel of either bathroom. Eight months on, both showers are switching cleanly with no maintenance beyond routine cleaning.
