Smart Glass Office Walls in Thousand Oaks

Project Overview

In September 2026, Smart View turned the glass walls of a corporate office in Thousand Oaks into privacy glass that switches on a remote. These smart glass office walls were already built: frameless glass partitions and glass swing doors around four conference rooms and along the lobby lounge. Instead of replacing any of it, we applied 433 square feet of switchable PDLC smart film to the glass that was already standing. The client is a major energy company, the same one whose six-panel sliding conference-room door we filmed on an earlier visit. This time the job was the rest of the floor.

Inside the Thousand Oaks Build

• 433 sq ft of switchable smart film across four conference rooms and the lobby lounge glass walls
• Applied to the existing frameless glass: no panels replaced, no new framing, and the swing doors kept their hardware
• Each room switches from clear to an even, milky white on a handheld remote
• Door leaves filmed along with the fixed panels, so a closed room reads as one solid white wall

The Problem: A Glass Floor Plan With Nowhere to Talk

Glass-walled meeting rooms look great on the day the office opens. They keep the floor bright, let people see which rooms are free and make a mid-size office feel open. They also mean every meeting happens in public. A budget review, an HR conversation or a screen full of numbers can all be seen from the lounge and the hallway. The usual fixes each give something up. Frosted vinyl is permanent, so the rooms lose the openness the glass was bought for. Blinds add hardware and dust to frameless walls that were designed to have neither. Replacing the partitions with switchable glass units would mean new glass, new lead times and a construction project in an occupied office.

Smart film avoids all three. It is a thin PDLC (polymer-dispersed liquid crystal) layer applied to the face of glass that is already installed. With power on, the crystals line up and the pane is clear. With power off, they scatter and the glass turns a solid, even white that shapes do not show through, while light still comes in. On a job like this, that is where the money is: the frameless walls, the patch fittings and the doors all stay, and the budget goes into the film and the controls instead of new glass.

Four Rooms and a Lobby, Private on Demand

Day to day, the rooms stay clear and the floor works the way it was designed, with open sightlines from the lounge through to the windows. When a meeting needs privacy, whoever is running it picks up the remote and the room goes white in about a second, doors included. The lobby lounge side matters most, because that is where visitors sit. Frosted, the lounge looks at a clean white wall instead of a meeting in progress. This project builds on the smart glass conference room in Thousand Oaks we completed for the same client, where the film went into a six-panel sliding door system. That visit covered one room; this one covered the floor.
