In 2024 our team completed a smart glass gym Ventura project: 200 sqft of PDLC switchable smart film, retrofitted directly onto the existing interior glazing. The job was finished in a single visit, with no glass replaced and no member access disrupted.
The owner needed flexible privacy across training rooms and partition walls that had always been clear glass. Static frosting wasn’t an option — it would have killed the open, naturally-lit feel members responded to. Curtains and blinds collect sweat, dust, and humidity in a gym environment, and they look out of place in a modern fitness space. A permanent privacy fix was the wrong answer; the owner needed something that could switch.
For this smart glass gym Ventura install, replacing the existing glass with new laminated smart glass would have meant tearing out partitions, taking the space offline, and rebuilding around new framing. A PDLC smart film retrofit avoided every one of those costs. We bonded the switchable film to the room-facing side of the existing glazing — no demolition, no permitting headaches, no downtime. The gym kept its existing aesthetic and got switchable privacy in days, not weeks.
We applied PDLC switchable smart film — a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer that turns clear when powered and opaque when off — directly to the existing interior glazing across 200 sqft of training-room and partition walls. Powered on, the film is crystal clear and the rooms read as open. Powered off, the film turns opaque white in under a second and the same panels become private. Control runs through a single wall switch — staff toggle privacy with one motion, no app, no remote, no training required.

The gym flexes between open studio mode and private-session mode at the tap of a switch. Staff use the privacy state for one-on-one training, body assessments, stretching with members who want a quieter space, and any time a class needs a closed-room feel. With the film clear, the floor stays bright and visually connected — daylight passes through the same way it always has, and the panels read as ordinary glass. Compared to the curtain and partition options the owner considered, the switchable solution is faster to operate, easier to clean, and doesn’t age out the way fabric does. Maintenance is glass cleaner and a microfiber cloth — nothing more. Eighteen months on, the smart glass gym Ventura panels are still switching cleanly with no maintenance beyond routine cleaning.
