Smart Glass Front Door Pasadena — Balcony Panel & Door Privacy on Demand
Project Overview
In 2024, we installed smart glass front door Pasadena upgrades on a homeowner’s full-glass front door and adjacent balcony panel — 140 sqft total of PDLC switchable smart film retrofitted onto the existing glass. The original setup looked clean during the day but required outdoor curtains at night for privacy, meaning the homeowner had to step outside every evening to close them. The new install gives instant privacy at the press of a remote.
The Problem
The full-glass entry was a strong design choice — natural light, modern look, clear views from inside. But the same transparency that worked during the day exposed the entryway at night. Outdoor curtains were a workaround, not a solution: they required stepping outside in the dark, didn’t always close cleanly, and added visual clutter to the modern facade.
- Privacy on demand without leaving the house to draw curtains
- Zero replacement of the existing glass or door frame
- A control simple enough to use on the way to bed
The Solution
Our team retrofitted PDLC switchable smart film onto the existing glass on both the front door and the adjacent balcony panel — 140 sqft total across both surfaces. In the clear state the film is optically transparent, so the entry looks identical to before. Switch the film on with the wireless remote and the panels turn frosted in under a second, blocking sightlines while still passing ambient porch light. Smart glass front door Pasadena installs like this rely on careful frame integration and clean electrical routing — both handled by our smart film installation Los Angeles team and Canoga Park warehouse.
We routed the electrical feed discreetly so nothing about the door’s modern character changed. Both surfaces switch together from a single remote, so one press handles both panels at once.
Install specs:
| Square footage | 140 sqft total (front door + balcony panel) |
| Scope | Front door glass + adjacent balcony panel |
| Product | PDLC switchable smart glass (film applied to existing glazing) |
| Control | Wireless handheld remote |
| Property type | Residential, Pasadena |
| Completion | 2024 |
The Outcome
The homeowner now picks up the remote on the way upstairs and the entry frosts instantly — no more stepping outside to draw curtains, no more leaving the door exposed during the night-time routine. During the day the glass stays clear, preserving the open modern feel of the entry. The setup fit into the homeowner’s daily routine without changing how the door looks. We documented a similar smart-glass front-door retrofit in our Beverly Hills front door project for a different scope.
