Smart Film Living Room in Los Angeles
Project Overview
In early 2026, our team completed a smart film living room Los Angeles installation for a residential homeowner who wanted on-demand privacy across the home’s main glass panels without giving up natural light or the open feel of the room. The space already had large glass surfaces driving the modern aesthetic — replacing the glass entirely or hanging curtains over it would have killed the look the homeowner had built the room around. We applied PDLC switchable smart film directly to the existing glazing across 65 square feet, operated by a single remote handset. The job finished in one site visit: no demo work, no new glass, no fabric, no visible hardware on the glass surface. The film integrates flush with the existing panels and reads as part of the original design rather than an aftermarket privacy add-on.
What the Client Wanted
The homeowner needed privacy on demand for moments when the room shifts from open social space to private retreat, but didn’t want curtains, blinds, or any visible hardware breaking the home’s modern aesthetic. The solution had to be clean, fast, and simple enough that any household member could operate it without thinking.
- Privacy on demand without sacrificing daylight or the room’s open feel
- Zero construction, zero visible hardware on the glass surface
- One-touch control any household member could use intuitively
The Solution
We applied PDLC switchable smart film directly to the existing glass panels using a vacuum-assisted application process that prevents air bubbles, edge lift, and visual distortion. The film integrates a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal layer between the glass surface and a clear conductive layer. When voltage flows, the liquid crystals align and the film turns transparent. Cut the power and the crystals scatter back to a frosted state in milliseconds. The low-voltage wiring is concealed inside the wall and connects to a remote-control receiver, so the only visible change to the room is the surface itself shifting between clear and private. This is the same smart film installation in Los Angeles approach we use across our LA residential and commercial projects.
The Outcome
The homeowner now has full daylight when entertaining or working from the room, then shifts the entire glass surface to frosted with a single remote click for movie nights, late evenings, or unexpected guests. They reported the install exceeded expectations — particularly the speed of the clear-to-frosted transition and how the film disappears visually when active. The result reads as part of the home’s design rather than an aftermarket privacy add-on.
