What A Smart Glass Transformer Does

Smart glass transformers are the power supplies that drive PDLC switchable glass and film. The film itself is a passive laminate with no memory and no battery. Apply low-voltage AC across the conductive layers and the liquid crystals align so light passes through; cut the power and they relax into a scattered orientation that turns the panel frosted.

The transformer generates that low-voltage AC from your wall power. It’s the most failure-prone part of the system — when smart glass stops working, the transformer is almost always the cause.

Sizes And Ratings We Stock

We stock and ship smart glass transformers in three sizes:

  • Small (residential single-window) — under 50 sqft of film. Typical use: bedroom window, bathroom mirror, single bay window panel.
  • Medium (standard residential / small commercial) — 50–150 sqft. Typical use: full master suite, conference room glass wall, small storefront.
  • Large (commercial partitions / curtain walls) — 150+ sqft, often parallel-wired. Typical use: full office partitions, curtain walls, large hospitality glass.

Most PDLC films run on AC output in the 60–120V range with input from a standard 120V AC wall supply.

Compatibility

Our smart glass transformers are compatible with:

  • Gauzy smart glass and smart film systems
  • Innovative Glass Liquid Crystal Glass
  • Polytronix PolyVision
  • Most generic Chinese-import PDLC films and panels

Compatibility comes down to AC voltage range and connector type. Most PDLC systems use the same operating voltage band, so a Smart View replacement transformer typically works with any system on standard PDLC voltages — even when the original brand has gone unresponsive.

For a compatibility check, send us a photo of your existing transformer’s spec label and we’ll confirm the right replacement.

How To Identify Your Existing Transformer

The spec label tells us everything we need:

  • Input voltage — usually 120V or 110–240V universal
  • Output voltage — the AC voltage feeding the film, often 60–120V
  • VA rating — total wattage capacity, dictates how much sqft of film the unit can drive
  • Connector style — screw terminals, push-fit, or proprietary plugs

Take a clear photo of the entire transformer including any sticker. Send it to us with the rough sqft of film it powers. We’ll match it to a compatible replacement.

Installation: DIY Or Pro

Replacing a smart glass transformer is straightforward for most installs. The wiring is a 4-step process: turn off wall power, disconnect the old unit, connect the new unit’s terminals to the same wires, and turn power back on. Most homeowners or contractors finish the swap in 30 minutes per unit.

For commercial installs with multi-channel transformers, conduit-routed wiring, or integrated home automation control (Lutron, Savant), bring in an electrician or call us for remote support.

If the system is still failing after a transformer swap, see our smart glass repair page for next-step diagnostics.

What “Smart Glass Transformers” Actually Means

Smart glass transformers are the AC power supply units that drive PDLC switchable glass or film systems — not the glass, not the film, not the wall switch. The transformer is a standalone enclosure (typically a small black or grey box) that lives in a wiring closet, behind a wall plate, in a soffit, or above a drop ceiling near the panel it powers. Larger commercial systems may have multiple transformers wired in parallel.

The transformer is the part most likely to need replacement during the system’s lifetime — the film and glass usually outlive it 2–3 times over.
