Smart Glass Repair — When Your PDLC Stops Working

Replacement transformers and troubleshooting for switchable smart glass systems — including Gauzy, Innovative Glass, and other PDLC brands. Ships anywhere in the US.

Where Smart Glass Repair Fits

Smart glass repair usually comes down to the transformer. PDLC switchable glass and film need a low-voltage AC supply to switch states. When the supply unit fails, the glass gets stuck on one state (usually frosted, the unpowered default) or behaves erratically. The film and wiring rarely fail outright — the transformer fails routinely. Smart View ships compatible replacement transformers anywhere in the US, including units that work with Gauzy, Innovative Glass, and most other PDLC brands.

Common Smart Glass Problems

The symptoms we see most often:

  • Stuck on frosted — most common. Glass won’t switch to clear. Almost always a dead transformer.
  • Stuck on clear — less common. Film won’t frost. Could be wiring short or transformer issue.
  • Flickering between states — transformer voltage dropout or beginning of failure.
  • Partial frosting — only some areas switch. Indicates film delamination or local wiring break.
  • Slow switching — transformer underpowered for panel size, or transformer aging.
  • Dead — nothing happens at all — transformer failed or wiring break.
  • Buzzing or audible noise — transformer failing; replace before it cuts out completely.

How To Diagnose At Home

Before ordering parts, check:

  1. Wall switch — is power getting to the transformer?
  2. Transformer LED — most units have a power indicator. Lit means power is reaching the unit.
  3. Output voltage — if you have a multimeter, the transformer’s AC output should be in the spec range stamped on the unit (often 60–120V AC at the film terminals).
  4. Cable continuity — a broken wire to the panel will read as transformer failure when the transformer is fine.

If the checks point to the transformer, you need a replacement

Replacement Transformers We Sell

We stock and ship compatible PDLC transformers in common sizes: small (under 50 sqft), medium (50–150 sqft), and large (150+ sqft, often parallel-wired multi-unit for commercial partitions). All units ship anywhere in the US within 5–7 business days. Compatibility covers Gauzy, Innovative Glass, Polytronix, and most generic Chinese-import PDLC systems.

For a compatibility check, send us a photo of your existing transformer’s spec label and we’ll confirm the right replacement before you order. For Gauzy-specific failures, see our detailed guide: Gauzy smart glass transformer — diagnosis and replacement.

Why choose us

What "Smart Glass Repair" Actually Means

A smart glass repair, in our shop’s definition, is any fix that gets a previously-installed switchable glass system back to working without replacing the glass itself. That usually means transformer replacement, occasionally rewiring, occasionally re-bonding lifted film. PDLC systems are mechanically simple — the failures are almost always electrical, not optical.

If the diagnosis points beyond the transformer (delamination, IGU failure, cracked glass), the answer shifts from repair to replacement. We can do either.

When Smart Glass Repair Isn't Possible

Some failures aren’t repairable with a transformer swap:

  • Film delamination — bubbles, peeling, or visible separation between glass and film. End of film life. Replace the panel or strip and reapply new film.
  • Water damage — moisture got behind the film or into the IGU spacer. Replace the panel.
  • Yellow tint / clouding — UV degradation over many years. Eventually the film stops switching cleanly.
  • Cracked glass — film often survives a glass crack, but the panel needs replacement for safety reasons.

In these cases the right move is replacement, not repair. We can quote a new fabricated panel — see our smart glass installation Los Angeles page for replacement install service or our PDLC switchable smart glass page for product specs.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Smart film is a switchable privacy film that installs directly onto existing glass. It switches from clear to frosted instantly.

Switchable smart film typically costs $35 per square foot for the material. Total cost depends on wiring, transformer, and installation.

Yes. When power is ON, smart film is clear. When power is OFF, it turns frosted.

Yes. Smart tint uses PDLC technology to switch between frosted and clear. It is reliable when the film and installation are high quality.

Yes. Smart film is designed to install onto existing glass and is one of the fastest ways to upgrade privacy.

Yes. Most smart film installs are done on the interior side of double-pane glass.

Yes, but proper sealing and moisture protection are required to prevent edge damage.

It turns frosted automatically when power is off.

Yes. Smart film can be controlled by a standard wall switch, remote, or smart control system.

Yes. Smart film can be connected to smart switches or automation systems for phone control.

Yes. Smart film can be integrated using smart relays or compatible control systems.

Yes. In frosted mode, smart film becomes an excellent projector screen for offices and conference rooms.

Most high-quality smart film lasts around 10+ years depending on environment and installation quality.

It can scratch if cleaned incorrectly. Use a soft microfiber cloth and alcohol.

It is better to avoid ammonia-based cleaners. Alcohol its better.

Most smart film blocks a significant amount of UV, helping reduce fading for furniture and flooring.

Smart film is mainly for privacy, not heat rejection. For heat reduction, a solar film or low-E glass may be needed.
